Episode #55 Self Actualization and Becoming a Complete Human with Dr. Scott Barry Kaufman
What is self actualization? For as long as humans have walked the Earth, people have dreamed about their true potential. From fire and the wheel to putting a man on the moon, our desire to push the boundaries of what we once thought was impossible has been the driving force and often the crowning achievements in the relatively short history of humankind on this planet.
John F Kennedy’s famous speech about going the moon where he says “We choose to go to the Moon in this decade and do the other things, not because they are easy, but because they are hard..” is a testament to what we are capable of. Some question whether we have lost that ability. In the age of cancel culture, where division is the societal norm, can we come together to realize our own potential while joining together to accomplish the impossible? Has that desire been replaced by something far more sinister?
And where does this desire even stem from? Maslow’s hierarchy of basic human needs has been the default ideology for man’s quest for actualization for decades. But what really is behind self actualization? What does it even mean?
As we peel back the layers of the Complete Human, we find that our own potential as individuals, and as a species emerges time and again as the distinguishing characteristic that might just save us from all from our past transgressions.
On toady’s show, Dr. Scott Barry Kaufman takes us on a journey into human’s potential, the pitfalls of Maslow’s theory and how we can all take one step closer to realizing our fullest potential.
